& Programs

Each day, multiple community partners and volunteers join our guests at our office to offer vital services. Without these partnerships, much of the work that takes place each day at the Women’s Center would not be possible.

Upon first seeking services at The Women’s Center, a Safety and Stabilization Service Plan is created for each guest. This plan addresses the survival and safety needs of our guests.

Safety and Stabilization Services include providing nutrition, emergency food and safety referrals, personal hygiene products, clothing, access to phones and computers, and basic needs. Basic Needs Services are often the portal of engagement to other support services we provide, including mutual aid and recovery programming, engagement for behavioral and mental health treatment, and housing assistance.

Clinical and case management, education, and testing are provided on-site by community partners. We rely on a cadre of community partners to provide important supportive services to our guests.

Partners that help to make these services possible include:

  • Advance Community Health
  • Wake County Health and Human Services
  • Oak Street Health
  • Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina
  • Wake Med Center for Community Health

The Women’s Center collaborates with partners from across the community to find individually appropriate housing for our guests.

Through a unique combination of Recuperative Respite, Transitional Housing, Permanent Supportive Housing, and Community Connections Housing, we housed more than 130 women in 2025.

Recuperative Respite

The Women’s Center of Wake County’s Recuperative Respite provides 24-hour comprehensive safety, stabilization, and housing services to single, adult women experiencing homelessness with a post-acute medical need.

Recuperative Respite is designed to provide stability and safety when guests are too well for the hospital, but unable to return to shelters or other place not meant for human habitation due to ongoing medical needs.

Our Recuperative Respite program consists of eleven beds in our location on New Bern Avenue. Five beds are reserved for referrals from Wake Med Community Health, the remaining beds are utilized by women from the community.

Every guest utilizing the Recuperative Respite enters a supportive program, where they work with Women’s Center staff to establish personal goals with the long-term goal being permanent housing. The Recuperative Respite program provides multiple wrap-around services, in addition to the existing resources of the Day Shelter, as the program participants work toward permanent housing.

Guests are admitted to Recuperative Respite ONLY by referral from partner agencies.
